Heatlens vs Hotjar

Hotjar is now part of Contentsquare. Facts checked on 9 October 2026, from the pages listed below.

Hotjar became part of Contentsquare, and new Hotjar accounts can no longer be created: its heatmaps and session replay now come with Contentsquare's plans. Heatlens takes another route: heatmaps that run inside the Matomo you host, bought once.

When Hotjar / Contentsquare is the better choice

  • You want a full experience-analytics suite: session replay, surveys, funnels and AI summaries.
  • You prefer a hosted service and don't run Matomo.
  • A monthly subscription that grows with your traffic suits your budget.

When Heatlens is the better choice

  • You already run Matomo On-Premise and want heatmaps in the same place, with the same consent flow.
  • Visitor behaviour must stay on your own servers, with no third-party cloud or sub-processors.
  • You'd rather pay once than follow a session quota every month.
